Right. Given the option I will always choose to work with a decent programmer who can communicate well and documents their code, over a very strong programmer that doesn’t think they should waste time with documentation

As long as “cleaner than you found it” also includes “better documented.” I’ve worked with people who think that “the code should speak for itself” to the point that they will make biased decisions with no explanation or documentation and then if you ask them about it after their response is “look at the PR for how that decision was made.” I’m not going to git blame and find your PR to find an outcome from an argument between two people that after scrolling just says “sometimes the API returns a JSON string here instead of nested JSON so we have this conditional” when that could be a comment

When I’m off the clock I don’t see work emails or messages. My boss still has my cell number though. This card doesn’t at all say someone is checking their email, just says there is a critical production bug and someone was emailed about it

Even that’s just a monetary decision. They are choosing not to spend money to build a custom “premium” experience for paying customers and instead just stripping ads, keeping the existing engagement/monetization driven UI in place. A customized UI takes more dev time, costs more in engineering labor, etc

And all of those come down to money

Search shows you random videos because “the algorithm” is hoping to drive you through to videos that are the most monetized and the most likely to keep you on the platform based on their data

The shorts thing is because they can pack more ads into 15 second bits of content while using less bandwidth and they’re hoping to hijack your attention with an “endless stream” of short clips a la TikTok or instagram reels

The video bandwidth drops to low every time because they’re hoping people will still watch, see the ads, and not bump the quality up, saving Google on bandwidth costs

The live streams thing is just more advertising revenue again

That’s true, it would be more accurate to say that much of the web uses PHP or Hack, a PHP derivative. I think I was moreso thinking along the lines of the previous comments about the hatred for PHP being more of a meme at this point than a reality

Plus, Facebook literally forked PHP and still uses it, and is one of the most popular sites on the internet
