Yes please!
…and this latest proposal certainly isn’t either of those things.
This logo is really unpopular
Source? I’ve only ever seen a handful of strawman arguments that “I’m not offended by the vague resemblance to a pentagram/use of rainbow colours implying LGBTQ+ support, but somebody might be”, but its fairly wide adoption suggests that most people — myself included — actually like it.
Well played 👏😄
Exactly. A logo isn’t meant to work at 11 point size in the middle of inline text. The typographical argument is nonsense, and I think this proposal is really a reaction to the idiotic “Satanic panic” over the rainbow pentacle.
What else!? 🏅
There already is a symbol for the fediverse:
This has existed for years already, is used widely, and IMHO looks way better than this dull attempt. I see no good argument in the campaign website for using this new one instead.
Solution: create a static mirror of Reddit for preservation of the single digit percentage worthwhile content, nuke the main site entirely to stop new trash being added to the dumpster fire.
Repeat the process with Twitter, then 4chan or whatever they call it this week.
Thanks for clearing that up 🙂 Still, migrating all your locked-in reviews or whatever to the Fediverse is a pretty big deal for compulsive opinion-havers!
I’m confused about this part:
the platform offers an incredible piece of insight about data: “You don’t have to start over from scratch. You can totally just add your old data to your graph.” This idea is key to understanding what NeoDB actually is: a tool for piecing your online data together under one open, free, federated account.
So I get that it imports your reviews and posts from the big, closed platforms like IMDb, but could it also be used as a hub for different Fediverse accounts? Because the first part is cool, the second could be significant in terms of profile management?
Report them and hope that mods agree?
It’s certainly better than all those verification scams that were popping up after a lot of journos migrated off Twitter…
Speaking of bylines, at this time of writing the only comment on the Verge piece claims that “‘Fediverse’ is the dumbest possible name [and] we gotta come up with a different one”. Signed, “DarthLazers” 🤣
TL;DR — Ghost started out as a WordPress alternative but gradually moved to focus on newsletter formats (at which point, see u/maegul’s reply), and the dev team have worked on implementing ActivityPub for a good while now.
From what I can tell Ghost is a really mature project with a lot of traction. I think having a federated newsletter platform is an interesting addition to the fediverse.
Does Nitter still work for you? Because several instances officially closed when “Twitter blocked the last known way to access their network without a user account” (quoted from nitter.cz).
Yeah well, there are surveillance reasons you don’t want to rely on services based in the USA.
You’re doing what again?! Insert obligatory 15 standards XKCD (edited because you can’t link images directly?)
Jokes aside, tell us more!
I’m sympathetic to a lot of Balkan’s points but somehow everything he’s involved in is overshadowed by his belligerent online persona. Stop picking fights, dude, and get shit done instead.
the real fediverse uses activitypub
Well, yeah. There are a few interoperable protocols but activitypub is certainly the major mover and shaker. Friendica and Diaspora doggedly stick to their own protocols afaik but they manage to still federate to the larger fediverse.
“A bit better than the official Mastodon app” isn’t high praise, though. Kudos to Eugen and all other devs for the work on the Mastodon server but their mobile app is absolute shite.
The quality about the fediverse that I appreciate the most is the fact that nobody on any of its platforms raised an eyebrow at having a rainbow-coloured pentagram for a logo, until the first Twitter exodus when some newcomer primed for spotting the mildest of outrage-by-proxy gasped, “Have you seen this? Somebody might get upset!”
Meanwhile, the pentagram has been warding off hyperbolic fundamentalists since 2018. The fediverse is much chiller without them. 🤘
