I think about that show surprisingly often and how amazing a compression method like that would be right now. Our internet and storage speeds have not remotely kept up with the rapidly expanding size of files these days.

I have been just bewildered at the proliferation of excessive scripts and garbage on seemingly every webpage over the last decade. I’m no web-dev, but I’m pretty positive that the vast majority of websites could remove 99-some percent of their javascript bs and their websites would function just fine. So many are pretty much unusable these days. It’s atrocious.

Most showerheads, in my experience, spray water at an angle from closer to the wall (like this), or are a more mobile version that usually sits in a similar position, but can also be used handheld (like this). A showerhead that sprays water from directly overhead is unusual.

If you’re referring to the overhead style showerhead, personally I’ve seen them in the UK (no idea if it’s the norm, but it’s what I had access to) and a few times in the US, though it’s definitely not the norm there.

To be clear, I’m not saying it is sketchy. I’m saying that giving absolutely zero information on a service they are ostensibly promoting makes it look sketchy. Giving even a simple breakdown of their goals and process is really the least they could do.

They may want to add a description of what the hell it is, instead of just linking to a website that is only an email gathering prompt. Right now all I can gather from comments on it is that it monetizes the fediverse “somehow”, but there’s zero explanation of where the money comes from, who it goes to, who the whole thing supports, etc etc. If they don’t want to seem sketchy as hell, they should be forthcoming about who they are and how they work.

Then you’re missing the distinction as well.

To be clear, I’m not talking about underlying mechanisms, either, but the approach to the task. A human writer, even one bad at writing and not understanding the topic, will approach the writing with a goal and write to that goal and topic. They can even research if they so choose, but even if they are just making things up, there is intent and context there.

An LLM doesn’t have any of that. It literally just generates words that match certain patterns, with no actual purpose or goal. It may have been programmed with a goal in mind, but it doesn’t have one of its own. It can’t reason, it can’t research, it can’t make decisions. I think that is an important distinction that people who are just saying “Who cares? It’s all bad writing anyways” are missing.

The top comment is about how LLMs don’t comprehend what they’re writing, and your first comment (as I read it) was about how LLMs work how human brains do. My point was that they don’t and why, not about how good or bad humans or machines are at writing, which is what you kept bringing up, hence the frustration.
