That brings it outside of the reasonable range for most people, I would think.
Am I right in suggesting that e-ink displays remain artificially overpriced because of the company that ultimately owns the patent?

I post this in offering to the internet gods, that this may be the first step which leads to an actually meaningful change.
Computers are so fast now, we should just write everything in BASIC anyway
They haven’t explained it because it’s a giant security issue. If it wasn’t, they would have included it in the announcement.
Just another company trying to ride the wave of free press.
It’s far easier to search for and find things with unique names, especially if one name will unite a family of things.
I think it depends on where you live. I’ve been without Prime a while and haven’t seen the artificial slowdown. It always says it’ll take 9 days or something when I order, but most often I get a shipping update the next day and things show up in 2-3 days anyway.
I canceled mine a year or two ago. Tbh I have not missed it much.
I also did not miss the shipping part as much as I thought I would. If I need to make an order, I wait until I have enough needs to hit the $35 level for free shipping. Even though amazon claims otherwise, I usually end up getting stuff in 2 days just like I used to with Prime.
This has the added benefit of making it less likely for me to be lazy and order a bunch of smaller things. I thus end up getting those things locally.
Nvidia, yes. There are other options.
I used Relay back when I was a redditor.
Ship sailed. I get the dev trying to recoup costs and keep the thing running. But ultimately reddit made their call and that market isn’t really there anymore.
Libretube is another similar option.
I like having an instance with local communities that match some of my interests. I also tried to find one a little more niche, but not so small as to be run out of someone’s closet. And of course, always donate to your home instance. Bandwidth doesn’t grow on trees!
On the privacy side, it was also important to me to have an instance that didn’t want my email address.
No disagreements! It does seem like an area that needs improvement.
I don’t think it really applies to patent holders. The company doesn’t make the displays – they license their patent to the companies that make the displays. The licensing cost is what causes the displays to remain expensive, but I’m not sure this counts as a monopoly. I’m not a lawyer, but it seems like patent holders can do pretty much what they like with the patent (and indeed, that kind of seems like the whole point of a patent).
It’s the display that is prohibitively and arbitrarily expensive. None of the other variables matter since all of the low power / retain image advantage is solely because of that display.
And large e-ink displays will remain niche, simply because of the company’s pricing.
Your canine is free but not on fire
This is going to happen for a while. Execs who actually have no clue have now been sold on the idea that AI lets them keep making money without paying labor.
It will fail eventually when the execs eventually take the time to learn what AI is capable of and what it isn’t capable of.
Who am I kidding? It’ll continue indefinitely because there are few consequences for clueless executives.
One could make the argument that they kind of 3d printed a pressure vessel. Using those terms makes it sound about as bad as it actually was.
Lithium-Ion is great but could definitely be better.
Name checks out.
The controller, yes. The display itself, no, as far as I can tell.
