  • I wonder if they were taking notes from John Deere and the automotive industry or will it be the reverse here soon?

Just imagine all these vehicles that could be bricked for not going back to the stealerships for outrageous prices on parts and incompetent service.

Also the vehicles that could be disabled for not paying for device protection plan that allows your vehicle to operate safely. It would be a shame if your vehicle stopped working on your way to work or the hospital.

I suspect Tesla, BMW, and John Deere are the closest to this reality.

I sure hope the government doesn’t help with another great cash for clunkers national program to get rid of more cars too old for these measures. Sure is a great way to drive new car sales though…

  • I’m glad to see this. I was mostly a lurker at the old place for over 10 years.

Creating posts and commenting at times was difficult and often they were deleted due to some rule or issue. The worst was when users would message to let me know the post had been deleted and they knew due to some other form of the site they were using.

In all my years of managing Forums before this period it wasn’t that hard to create new topics and participate so I gave up.

I started lurking here at Lemmy then starting seeing this theme about user engagement going down and not enough content. When I would end up back at the old place after a Google search on something I could see the volume number differences between lemmy and there so I decided to try posting again.

So far it’s been a lot easier especially in sh1tposting. I did run into a couple of hiccups but overall it’s been a lot easier.

I’ll enjoy it while it lasts as over time with more users things will change, at least for now the posts are not drowning in comments by the thousands yet. I can keep up with that. It kind of reminds me of my old forum days in the early 2000s.

  • I do recall trying out Chatroulette when it first came out but it was a lot of mushroom caps I wasn’t interested in seeing so I didn’t stick around long.

Back before that when I was dating some of that included the personal section of Craigslist. Unfortunately there was some horrible attacks of sex trade workers that used the personals down in the US and then the US government came together to “protect” people by holding the websites liable.

In the process the personal section of CL which included dating and penpals was closed. Many people met their spouses and had long term relationships and friendships as a result of CL that they wouldn’t have had in real life. I think it some ways that dating section was much better than the juiced up dating sites that have followed since. They are more about driving revenue than true connections.

I’m not sure if they solved the sex trade problem, but I don’t think they have won the war on drugs either. Much like the gun lobbying crowd say innocent gun owners shouldn’t be affected I would think in the same way users of internet services shouldn’t be either.

But life isn’t so black and white and many of us are unable to get beyond this stage of adolescence…

  • I’m pretty reliant on a couple of big providers I find. Usually Amazon is my first search stop then Google. I find I need to disable my ad blockers to be able to use the sponsored links. I often am searching for a solution product not a specific item so I’m curious about the options. Then I narrow down into specific items which Google does a pretty good job of I find for me.

I was an early Google adopter so I’ve been using Google for a lot of things over the years.

I often use search within Google Maps to find locations hours, reviews on a experience, and a location or business’ website.

I’ve recently switched to Duck Duck Go and FF and I find it might be a familiarity to the types of localized results I miss as I’m still pretty plugged into the Google eco system and duck duck go doesn’t seem to hit the mark as closely for me.
