I believe blocking an instance hides posts from your feeds but nothing else, but it’s worth testing.

I have lemmit.online (reddit copy) blocked, but I can still search for a specific post and view it. I have also seen others complaining that when they bad an instance they still see comments from users on that instance, so at least at the moment it seems it just hides the posts from your feeds.

Ah right! OK first off, you can block all of Lemmy.world with one action now.

Secondly, Lemmy now supports image proxying (with a new feature in Pictrs 0.5, which I believe was also introduced in Lemmy 0.19). I’m not sure which instances have it enabled but in theory you can check the source of images for remote users who have posted images.

Lemmy is already a strain on hard drive storage so I don’t think many people have enabled it (proxying will store the images on the Lemmy server for a set period of time).

Both Lemmy and Mbin lack the ability to filter out or block Cloudflare nodes. They both only give a way to block specific forums.

Lemmy lets you block whole instances, it was introduced in 0.19.0 (which was released just before Christmas, but many instances didn’t update until 0.19.3 was released around the start of the year due to federation issues with 0.19.0).

I don’t get why you want users to be able to apply cloudflare filters, though. If your instance doesn’t use cloudflare, then you won’t access through cloudflare. I’d actually be really interested in understanding why this is something you’re looking for, rather than just the ability to block an instance such as Lemmy.world.

You don’t need to scrape. If you want to get all the content on Lemmy, just set up an instance and subscribe to all the top communities, and the instances will just send you all the content.

So there isn’t really a way to monetise or block it. I guess you could only federate to a whitelist, but the biggest instances will federate by default with any new instances until they are given a reason to defederate.

Yep, definitely. That’s the allure. From what I can tell, it’s likely there are tens of thousands of people making over $1m a year. However, there are hundreds of millions of people uploading videos.

Most people won’t make much at all, but if you don’t have the people at the top making millions then no one has any incentive, so those people are critical.

There are lots of peertube instances. The issue is that YouTube uses ads to pay content creators, and so everyone puts their content on YouTube in the hope of becoming the next big thing.

Yeah I’m not sure what the weekly stand up is trying to achieve, maybe I’m just lucky but I don’t recall ever being in a team with these.

I do believe 1:1s are important, but that’s outside of scrum and should be on a schedule that works for the participants (might be an hour weekly for some, half an hour monthly for others).

I’ve recently been in a scrum team that failed to follow most of this structure and it was a shambles.

I agree that this setup gives purpose to each meeting, and they are all things that are important.

Lemmy doesn’t have a lot of things. It’s not a finished product, but more like something that was in the process of being built when suddenly tens of thousands of people started using it. They didn’t even finish the planned roadmap as they had to pivot to rewrite stuff to handle the influx of users.

I’m gonna take this opportunity to mention LemmyAutomod, for Lemmy instance admins.

This massive spam attack was unrelenting, but it came in the form of a large number of spam posts that had a small amount of variation. Using the above tool, it really helped to catch most of the spam within seconds or minutes of being posted.

The dev is really helpful, which is good because I needed some hand-holding, but it has been a fantastic tool with this latest spam wave being the first true test of it. When the spammers started posting images of URLs instead of links, the dev added functionality to detect images that were the same or similar to a reference image.

In addition, there’s also a Lemmy spam defense Matrix chat set up by Lemmy.world where instance admins post spam accounts so others can ban them on their own instances (and add them to their automod).

I’m not an architect, but I’ve sat in on architecture presentations and the most rewarding feedback I’ve seen is “Any objections? Ok, approved”.

GUIDs are globally unique because of maths and clocks not because of checking. When you generate a GUID you can be confident no GUID the same has ever been generated using that algorithm, ever, anywhere, and you don’t have to check.

However, someone pointed out you could run a malicious instance that copies GUIDs from other instances and federates them out to deliberately cause issues, so this idea is out.

No they wouldn’t, that’s the point of a GUID - they are globally unique.

However, I’ve changed my mind. For the nice-URL factor, having @instance is better and provides extra info.
