Well then I’m not pirating anything, I’m just downloading data and if it happens to correlate to the new Aliens movie then that’s not my problem. 😮

Or at least space them out a bit. You get one set for the first 5-10 years, and then the second set has to last you the remaining 60-70.
Getting a new set at like 35-40 seems like a more sensible system to me.
Darwinism in action I guess…
Yeah that seems like the more likely move, have a free tier that starts off decent and a premium tier with ‘power features’ or whatever, and then slowly drift almost everything over to the ‘premium’ tier until in a few years you won’t be able to change your desktop wallpaper without paying. That definitely sounds like the MS way to me.
You can use Kiwix to save an offline copy of all sorts of stuff like Wikipedia and Project Gutenberg! They’re smaller than you might think too, all of Wikipedia is only about 80 gb IIRC.
I’m not sure if all the hexbear stuff falls under this heading, but it does make me wonder if there are any other large, currently unfederated communities out there which might suddenly connect to everything.
Apart from threads lol
There’s one either side!
Edit: also, I’m at “Newborn Paranoid” and definitely feeling the pull towards tech paranoid. Writing this on Librewolf in Arch (btw) lol.
Yep, there are quite a few forks of it too, eg. one for artists with a friendlier UI, a CAD-focused one, a game engine one etc.
I assume this is the same reason why they want to ban TikTok but not Facebook - it’s not so much that they object to the data harvesting, they just object to non-American data harvesting that they can’t readily influence.
