I had an assembly class in college. I didn’t love of at all. Got my first job after graduating and it was writing space shuttle engine control software, which was in assembly. I was kind of surprised at how fast it became natural after dealing with it full time. Still, it felt luxurious when we upgraded the controller and could do the software in C.

One of the things I look for in employees is the ability to distill complex topics into the important elements and explain it to someone unfamiliar. Some people are just naturally good at it, and it’s a really important skill for moving up a leadership chain.

That’s a fair point, but (1) Apple is still huge globally, with them and Samsung dwarfing everyone else and (2) Google doesn’t operate in China, and probably some other countries, so the total global market isn’t relevant either.

I’m not sure you get what I’m saying. 56% of smartphones are Apples. The next biggest is Samsung, with just 26%. Next is Motorola with just 4%. Add all the Android phones together and the number doesn’t come close to the number of Apple phones. So yeah, it makes sense that Google is going to give a bigger incentive to a company that is going to drive more traffic by far than any other.

Isn’t that partly because Apple is one big company, but “Android” isn’t? The number of Android phones rivals Apple, but they’re made be a bunch of different companies, with Samsung selling the most.

Some people have given you guys a lot of flack, but I really think you’re making a thoughtful, good faith effort to do things right, and I think you’re doing well. There have been a couple things that I thought were the wrong decision, but (1) they’ve been relatively minor, and (2) they’ve been reasonable even if I might have chosen differently. I very much appreciate the thought that goes into running this place.

That was my takeaway, too, and I think it’s positive. The nice thing is, if it turns out that the policy fosters behavior that’s bad for the broader community, they can change it.

Exactly - that description was kind of frustrating. It makes it sound like they took a drastic action to deal with a very mild annoyance, when apparently that wasn’t the case

I’ve said before that I think Beehaw’s goal of a harassment-free and troll-free space is unlikely to succeed on a federated platform, but I respect their right to give it a shot and their actions seem reasonable given the situation.

Except that wasn’t how they described it. They said they were getting a lot of posts that required moderator action, and people there said it was trolls and harassment.

I believe many of those people got banned, too.

There have been a lot of posts/discussions on this topic. Some people have been using bots to pull Reddit content and post it here. There’s not complete agreement on it, but my take on the main feelings are:

• It depends a bit on the community. If it’s one that’s mostly, say, pics without much discussion expected, people have less of a problem with it.
• Some people who moderated Reddit subs moved here and wanted to take their content with them, and most people don’t have an issue with that.
• No one has an issue if you see something like a video or a news item on Reddit and post a link to the source here. Hell, lots of Reddit content came from people seeing stuff on Facebook, Twitter, etc.
• What people most objected to is copying over gobs of discussion posts that didn’t have any of the above attributes. If I went into a community and saw 200 posts with no responses, I’d have no reason to comment on any of them. And doing it a lot just makes /new look like spam.
