So which is then? You want a one off script to just quickly crunch some numbers on a problem you still need to understand? Because that is where it is perfectly normal to get some errors and doodle around. That is the entire point of it.

Or you have a concise concept of what you are going to do, and how and why? Because that is what you do, when you program more than a “one off”.

Either you go to the store with a shopping list and you work through that list or you go browsing and see what comes up. But don’t expect to be as fast and have everything you needed, when you dont write your shopping list at home.

For “us” e.g. the users of the federated platforms i’d prefer the smaller, nicer and more qualitative community we have currently.

For the users of reddit there is the ones that also want this experience (again) and i am confident they’ll find their way eventually.

For the users of reddit that just want the quick meme/outrage video and farm karma on the ever same joke-chains, i think they are in the better spot for themselves than it would become if they’d clash here with the different culture.

For society as a whole i think enshittification is necessary to drive people off of platforms eventually. I wholeheartedly agree, that the enshittified web needs to go down, but it can only come from people realizing it for themselves.

you have the same problem with downloads though. In the end any download rate exceeding your disc write speed doesnt get you there faster.

i’d argue that chat gpt is mostly great at taking human bullshit tasks from humans, who dontwant to dothe bullshit, like regurgitating the text from a textbook in different words, writing cover letters for job applications, that are often machine analyzed for buzzwords anyways.

So its use case only exist in the domain of bullshit tasks that only exist to occupy two people without any added value.

i mean giving a confidence for recognizing a certain object in a picture is relatively straightforward.

But LLMs put together words by their likeliness of belonging together under your input (terribly oversimplified).the confidence behind that has no direct relation to how likely the statements made are true. I remember an example where someone made chatgpt say that 2+2 equals 5 because his wife said so. So chatgpt was confident that something is right when the wife says it, simply because it thinks these words to belong together.

I think we need to keep in mind that a programming language isn’t learned in a day whereas the use of most tools can be learnt within minutes, albeit not perfected of course.

The hurdle to learn a new language is higher and also there is only so many langauges you can be fluent in at the same time, until you start mixing stuff up and causing more problems for yourself than being proficient in just a few languages.

Nooo if a proframming language is not the best choice for every job it is worthless and all the programmers using it are heathens!

So he’ll rip an even bigger hole, when he is retiring because the company never bothered to get a new solution running. Then they get a hydra of legacy code that is poorly documented and probably using some old hacks based on even older forum posts, nowhere to be found again.

AI tools can be very powerful, but they usually need to be tailored to a specific use case by competent people.

With LLMs it seems to be the opposite, where people not competent for ML are applying it for the broadest of use cases. Just that it looks so good they are easily fooled and lack the understanding to realize the limits.

But there is a very important Usecase too:

Writing stuff that is only read and evaluated by similiar AI tools. It makes sense to write cover letters with ChatGPT because they are demanded but never read by a human on the other side of the job application. Since the weights and stuff behind it serm to be similiar, writing it with ChatGPT helps to pass the automatic analysis.

Rationally that is complete nonsense, but you basically need an AI tool to jump through the hoops made by an AI tool applied by stupid people who need to make themselves look smart.

But yeah, the quality of what is passing as journalism now is often ridiculous. But the only way to combat this is by having editors that are knowledgable about topics. But it seemed editors were the first people laid off, when internet articles became a thing.
