Just a stranger trying things.

Title mixed up Wayland and Nvidia :) I don’t think you typically get a new GPU assigned on the fly as you select one window manager over another :D
I don’t want to be cynical, but is this part required for Apple to implement RCS?
“and bring a wide range of iMessage-style features to messaging between iPhone and Android users.”
I can totally imagine it being limited to the encryption and the bare minimum, as imessages features don’t perfectly overlap with the RCS features (e.g. emojis).
It sounds like that would just be one of the consequences as the overall issue is abuse of dominant position. It is about all the defaults in Android, making alternatives hidden in the settings, but also the warning messages in browsers to revert back the search engine and paying all other companies for implementing google search as default.
There are other issues with google too, relating to privacy and such, but the above issue is really was is hurting the industry and preventing Google from actually ever being dethroned.
There is a fascinating article on the Verge about Neeva, an attempt at making an actually better search engine and they kind of succeeded but lost due to Google’s influence and power.

Additional options are likely to come later. For their Laptop 13, they started with Intel and now have AMD options.
The full AMD version for the Laptop 16 is the result of a partnership with AMD in the Advantage program which means AMD was involved in the design and tuning of this system which makes sense for a CPU and GPU combo laptop.
With swappable GPUs it would make perfect sense to follow up with Nvidia options in addition to future GPUs from either company.
The Laptop 13 also allows for the motherboard+CPU combo to be replaced both to upgrade but also to switch between an Intel and AMD option. It’s quite a feature.
I’m not sure I see the issue to be honest. The development is made in the open, the architecture is pretty flexible and is designed to be rather robust to rug pulls specifically such that less trust is required in the model.
Also, whenever these discussions happen, I can’t stop feeling that it is somehow also meant to imply that mastodon is somehow better. And I am not a fan of that, as if there could only be one good social network. The internet is better with multiple services, multiple of many things. That’s how there is cooperation, compatibility and development for the better.
